The New PaKo – Logistics Center

provides now 135 Outlets of Mac Geiz.

 

After the Successful Start of the new Logistics Center of PaKo Non Food in Landsberg near Halle not far away from Leipzig and Berlin / Germany on 16 August 2004 with the Warehouse Management Software WMS from KuglerConsulting / Germany this world-class Logistics Center provides now 135 Outlets of Mac Geiz.

 

In August 2005 there were “only” 100 Outlets to be served continuously and reliably. In April 2005 there are now already 135 Outlets and the number will increase further on.

 

Core Figures of New Logistics Center:

·          16.500 rack storage locations (pallet locations)

·          3.200 picking locations as part of the rack store locations

·          2000 bulk storage locations (pallet locations

·          3000 items: nonfood for household, office, toys, deco, animals food, but also chocolates

·          10000 to 20000 order lines per day (plus 100 % in future) dispatch and shipping to more than 100 outlets of Mac Geiz several times per week since August 2004 and now 135 outlets in April 2005

·          20 persons for picking in each shift (2 shifts now) plus persons and operators in receiving, putaway, replenishment and dispatch, all equipped with mobile RF Radio Frequency computer terminals

 

Special Topics of this Solution:

·          mobile workstations in receiving area in future also with scale for weights of new articles

·          mobile Radio Frequency terminals throughout the entire warehouse logistics business process: receiving, putaway, permanent stocktaking / cyle counting, replenishment, picking, dispatch

B e s t   P r ac t i s e

 

 

Our Customer, a well-known retail company with specific products in the area of nonfood,  will provide his more than 100 outlets from his new warehouse not far away from Leipzig.

 

Only a few days before Christmas 2003 the Management Board decided for KuglerConsulting as IT Partner for the optimization of the Logistics Business Processes in the new warehouse.


Step by step we could elaborate – together with the IT Manager, the Warehouse Manager and the Logistics Consultant in close relationship with the Management Board – the future Business Processes in the Warehouse especially for

  - Receiving

  - Putaway

  - Replenishment

  - Picking

  - Dispatch/Shipping

  - Stocktaking

and prepare Business Cases accordingly for each Business Process with representative data as examples taken from the daily operations.

 

In teamwork we specified our software system WMS through justifying the system parameters according to the structure of the specific Logistics Business processes of our Customer.

 

Then the Business Processes from Receiving till Dispatch including Stocktaking have been worked through systematically in the small project team - with the Business Cases and the data as examples – and the functions of the software and the interfaces to the Customer’s Enterprise Order and Material Management System have been traced and approved carefully – also in collaboration with the new technology of radio frequency terminals. About 30 radio frequency terminals will be introduced. (In the same sense the technology of RFID / transponder could be interfaced, as soon as necessary and enough benefit can be calculated, e.g. in a first step with RFID tags on the loading mediums / pallets circulating within the warehouse and to/from the outlets.)

Thereby the certainty of all members of the project team grew while working with the software system, also the certainty and confidence in imaging the future process in the new warehouse with increasing volume.

 

In the next step further employees primarily from the warehouse have been involved and integrated in the extended team:

During intensive training they all learnt in a specially prepared training room at the software system the new Business Processes on the basis of the Business Cases with the prepared data as examples.

 

An important milestone was the „mass test“ after Eastern 2004: The trained employees worked with the software system using the screens at the PC’s and the Radio Frequency Terminals including the Barcode Readers and performed all the Business Processes in the way as they will do in the daily operations. They did this with „full load“ on the software system and on the hardware system including interfacing and they reached even higher figures of transactions as our Customer will have in next future in Receiving, Putaway, Replenishment, Picking and Dispatch.
Thereby a high level of certainty and of confidence in the software system and the new Business Processes grew amongst all members.

 

Now the remaining maintenance data have to be put into the system and prepared for the live start, all the other employees in the warehouse have to be trained in the same way, occurring questions have to be handled and answered and final small amendments have to be done.

 

This huge work load has been performed by the team of our Customer in parallel to all the daily operations. There are no new employees being hired, also not for the complex phase of the relocation of warehouse operations from the old warehouse to the new warehouse quite a few kilometres away with partial parallel operations. The present employees are well involved in the existing Business Processes and will master the work with the new software system!
